Programme for the Weekend

Friday 10th February 2023

5:30pm - Welcome drinks reception in the Drawing Room

6:15pm - Concert 1 in the Compton Room, directed by Ruth Rogers and Simon Blendis, featuring a twist on a piece by Mozart and followed by Brahms’s String Sextet in G, a piece with a secret- the name of Brahms’s one-time fiancée is encoded into the music through a repeating motif that spells out her name, Agathe.
Mozart arr. Hoffmeister String Quintet, K497
Brahms String Sextet No.2 in G, Op.36

After the concert, dinner with wine will be served in the Garden Restaurant, with LMP’s musicians in attendance.

Saturday 11th February 2023

In the morning after breakfast, take your seats for a perceptive and informative talk that reveals what goes on behind the notes and about the life and works of George Enescu…

During the afternoon, there is the opportunity to join the musicians for an open rehearsal as they prepare for the evening’s concert.

4.00pm - Afternoon tea and pastries will be served while Shelley van Loen and the Palm Court Strings play by the Great Hall fire.

6.15pm - Concert 2 in the Compton Room (includes a complimentary glass of wine during a short interval), directed by Ruth Rogers and Simon Blendis.

We play two-string octets, a form of chamber music that only gained prominence during the nineteenth century. Both octets were written when the composers were still teenagers, which might cast light on their ambitious scope. Mendelssohn is sometimes thought of as an undaring composer, but his Octet in E-flat may be credited with establishing the octet genre in chamber music altogether. Finally, we hear George Enescu’s Octet in C, a work judged too risky to perform at its first rehearsals and now considered a staple of the genre.

Enescu Octet in C Major, Op. 7

After the concert, dinner with wine will be served in the Garden restaurant with the LMP’s musicians in attendance.
