Their colourful procession and awe inspiring firework display takes place on the beach, which is just a stone’s throw away from the Grand Hotel.
Bonfire night holds great significance for Eastbourne and Sussex as a whole, with the Sussex tradition dating back even further than the infamous Gunpowder plot, to a time when farm workers had little or no income during the cold autumn and winter months. Workers would cover their faces with soot, concealing their identity, whilst illegally begging for food, money or alcohol.
The modern day Bonfire Societies date back to the 16th century martyrs and the 17th century Gunpowder Plot of the notorious Guy Fawkes and gives rise to the Bonfire Prayer, “Remember, Remember the 5th of November”.
Eastbourne’s Bonfire Celebrations are a magnificent evening of historic merriment that people of all ages can enjoy. This year the torchlight procession will take place on Saturday 5th October, commencing at the Crown and Anchor at 7.30pm and heading East to West, before reaching the Wish Tower slopes with the firework display commencing at 9pm and the bonfire ignited on the beach shortly before.
